Idioms-modismos

Feeling under the weather

Meaning: Not feeling well, or feeling sick (sintiendo un poco mal or enferma)

I don’t feel really well = I feel under the weather.

A: What’s wrong? You look tired.

B: I feel under the weather today.

Don’t judge a book by its cover

Meaning: Not judging something by its initial appearance (El hábito no hace al monje.)

Appearance = aspecto, aparición

No pain, no gain

Meaning: You have to work hard in order to see results (si no duele, no sirve)

I need to study hard. No pain no gain!

Conversation: Do you have any plans for this weekend?


¿Tienes algún plan para este fin de semana?

  • I will go to Austin to see my daughter.

  • I will clean my house.

  • I will watch Netflix.

  • My son will play soccer so I will go see his game.

A: Do you have any plans for this weekend?

B: I am not sure. I don’t have any plans yet. I have a cabin fever though! there are not many places I can go these days.

A: You are telling me, ugh. I am so sick of staying home! Do you want to play a computer game together Saturday night?

B: Nah, I don’t usually play any video games. What about happy hour drinks? We can grab our drinks and chat over Whatsapp!

A: That sounds good! What about 7 pm?

B: That’s perfect. Can I ask my friend to join us?

A: Sure! That’s even better. I will see you then!

I don’t see my family and friends. I feel isolated. (aislado/solitario)

No, no suelo jugar a ningún videojuego. ¿Qué hay de las bebidas de la hora feliz? ¡Podemos tomar nuestras bebidas y charlar a través de Whatsapp!

Happy hour = la hora feliz at restaurant (usually, usualmente, 4-6 pm)

Grab drinks = get drinks (salir a beber)

Chat = have a conversation

A traves de = through o over


A: That sounds good! What about 7 pm?

Eso suena bien. ¿Qué tal 7 PM?

That sounds good!

What about ___? (when you propose, cuando usted propone ideas)

B: That’s perfect. Can I ask my friend to join us?

Eso es perfecto. ¿Puedo pedirle a mi amigo que se una a nosotros?

A: Sure! That’s even better. I will see you then!

¡Seguro! Eso es aún mejor. ¡Te veré entonces!

Sure = of course = sounds good = absolutely

“There is not much left.” (no queda mucho)
